If one were to describe the Lake George Region of New York State, the majestic Adirondack Mountain Range overlooking the island-dotted lake would surely be mentioned. But the area's natural beauty is not all of which it can be proud. It also possesses a rich heritage of boats navigating its waters, and automobiles and carriages travelling its roads. Thomas Jefferson called it the” Queen of American Lakes”, one look and it’s easy to understand why.

On Saturday, July 13, 2002, with clear blue skies, a temperature in the high 80’s and a soft breeze blowing out of the southwest, Lake George Antique Boat Museum held their 7th Annual Summer Symposium at the Lake George Village Docks in Lake George, New York. Guest speakers for the event were Caroline M. Welsh, Chief Curator of Arts & Director of Operations at The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, New York and Lewis Golub Chairman of the Board of The Saratoga Automobile Museum located in Saratoga Springs, New York

Lake George Antique Boat  Museum’s, purpose is to “preserve, interpret, teach and interactively exhibit the history of life on Lake George through the vessels used there.” said Henry Heller Smith Chairman of the Board. “Our focus is to share with future generations the significant impact  Lake George had on the economic, social and cultural heritage of the Adirondack Region and the Nation.  We have been granted a provisional charter by the University of the State of New York Education Department and are currently looking for a permanent home to house our collection and archives.  The symposium was the first to be held at the village docks and was a positive step towards increasing awareness for the museum.  We look forward to future events with the support of Lake George’s mayor and local officials

Whether you came to listen to the guest speakers or walk the village docks, there was something for everyone at this show. Linda Frazier, of Halls Marina brought Robert Knarr’s 36,‘ 1910 Hutchinson Long Deck Launch.  Ron Service and his friends from the Rolls Royce Club drew quite a bit of attention with a fine array of vintage cars. Land displays as well as in water displays gave the viewer the opportunity to fully enjoy these works of art in a glorious setting.  We look forward to next year!

As a local rock band played music from the 50’s & 60’s. Spectators wandered the docks taking in the sites. Pictured here is a 36 foot, 1910 Hutchinson long deck launch owned by  the Robert Knarr family.
Photo does not do the boat justice.

Dennis & Andrea Dickenson brought a beautiful turn of the century row boat in original condition. This boat was one of 500 boats built on Lake George by a builder name Smith. The boat was commissioned for Willar Taylor in 1902 and was a gift from his parents on his 12th birthaday. The Dickenson family enjoy the boat on Lake Placid New York as well as Lake George.

Symposium Speaker Lewis Golub representing the Saratoga Antique Automobile Museum turned some heads arriving in his 1937 Packhard Convertible which my wife wendy thinks is “just darling”
